Mole removal procedure with Radio Frequency Surgery:

1. Mole is cleaned and moistened with some saline solution before the surgery begins.

2. Small amount of local anesthetic is injected below the mole to numb the area as to minimize any discomfort during the operation.

3. A radio surgical device with a tungsten loop is used to raise the lesion and also to help lift it off. The area will be kept moist by swabbing with saline solution.

4. Then a biopsy will be taken and sent to the lab to determine that it is benign.

5. The energy level of the tungsten device will be adjusted so that there’s not excessive sparking and/or drag as the device goes through the tissues. The skin is then planed down slowly. There will be very little bleeding because in radio frequency therapy, the wound is actually cauterized as it’s cut.

6. After the lesion has been removed, those small bleeding areas will be cauterized as well. This involves very little pressure to the skin.

7. ‘Opsite’ spray dressing is then applied to waterproof the wound followed by small dressing to protect it.

8. After the mole removal procedure, the patient needs to keep the wound clean and dry. Scab that formed will drop off in a couple of weeks to reveal a layer of fresh skin.

9. If there is any bleeding after the operation, just apply small pressure over the wound for about 10 minutes before putting on another dressing.

10. If the wound becomes inflamed, red and pussy, it indicates infection. The patient needs to get back to the physician and get some antibiotic. The risk of infection is very low in this treatment as active electrode is used to remove the lesion

In spite of the mole removal procedure that you underwent, there are generally few aftercare guidelines that you should follow in order to accelerate the wound healing and minimize scarring.

1. Keep the area clean
If you had stitches, keep them covered with clean bandage until they are removed.

2. Keep hydrated
Dry skin is more vulnerable to scarring. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Lately, there are hypes about using natural home remedy for mole removal at home. Though the effectiveness of these natural home remedies is unproven and it differs from one person to another, some have found them to be useful to some extend. I personally have not tried any home remedy for mole removal; but I guess it would be a good idea to share the common remedies most people used to remove moles at home.

Here’s the list of home remedies I managed to get from the Internet that claimed to be effective for mole removal. I need to stress again, these home remedies are not scientifically proven. Try them at your own risk. Do not use them on malignant moles.

1. Hydrogen Peroxide
Wash your mole and pat dry to prepare the mole for removal using hydrogen peroxide. Smoothen the mole with nail file gently, and then apply a layer of Vaseline to protect the surrounding skin. Use a Q-tip or cotton ball and soak it with hydrogen peroxide. Apply it directly onto the mole several times until it turns white. This will sting a little.

Repeat the steps for several times a day; do not cover the mole during the treatment to aid for fast healing. However, if hydrogen peroxide is used before you go to bed, use a simple bandage to protect it. You may apply some Aloe Vera gels to soothe the stinging sensation after the hydrogen peroxide has dried up. Some have reported to have their moles removed in a matter of days, leaving no scar.

2. Apple cider vinegar
To use apple cider vinegar for mole removal, you need to make the surrounding skin of the mole to be as supple as possible to ensure easy removal. Moisten the mole and its surrounding skin with warm water for about 15 minutes. Apply Vaseline to the surrounding skin to protect it from the acidic apple cider vinegar.

Dip a Q-tip or cotton bud with some apple cider vinegar and apply it onto the mole. You may use cotton ball to treat bigger mole. Leave it for at least 15 minutes before wash it off with warm water and pat dry. Repeat this for few times a day.

3. Fresh pineapple juice
Apply fresh pineapple juice onto the mole and leave it overnight. Wash it off the next morning. Alternatively you can put a small slice of pineapple onto the mole, and wrap it around with a simple bandage to keep it in place. The mole is said to vanish after few applications.

4. Garlic
Garlic juice is rich in sulfur, and is said to be helpful in getting rid of moles. Cut a clove of garlic into half and place the cut portion of the garlic slice onto the mole. Make a simple bandage around the garlic slice to keep it in close contact with your mole. Leave it for overnight. If you can leave the bandage for 24 hours, it will speed up the treatment.

5. Iodine
Get some iodine tincture from drugstore and apply it onto your mole for 2 to 3 days consecutively. Use it before you go to sleep and leave it overnight to allow it soak into the mole. You will see your mole to be totally gone after 3 days.

6. Honey
Use only pure honey for the removal of moles. Apply pure honey directly onto the mole several times a day. It may take a couple of weeks for you to see the mole fading away. Alternatively, you can also mix flaxseed and flaxseed oil into the honey to aid in mole removal. Apply the mixture regularly onto the mole and expect to see the mole becoming lighter after few days.

Mole Removal Procedures: Excision

Excision is the oldest method used to remove unwanted moles. The procedure involves the cutting of tissues surrounding the mole with the use of a medical cutting device like scalpel. This method is effective even for deep moles as mole tissues are cut deep enough to remove all the mole cells in order to get rid of the entire mole.

Stitching is required to seal the hole and this usually leaves a scar. The severity and the size of the scar are very well dependent on how big the mole was and how deep of the cutting needed. After-care is very important following the excision procedure to prevent infection, which might lead to scarring as well.

Mole Removal Procedures: Shaving

Shaving method is best used on moles that do not reach too deep into the skin. This procedure uses a sharp blade to shave off the protruding part of the mole, making it even with the surrounding skin. No stitches are required in this method. However, mole cells that lay underneath the skin are not removed. This poses the possibility of mole growing back.

Laser Mole Removal Procedures

Laser treatment is the latest mole removal technique used to remove unsightly moles. The procedure entails the use of laser beam on low setting to vanish the mole tissues. Scarring is rare in laser mole removal as no cutting or stitches are required.

However, laser treatment is only effective for removing flat moles, as laser beam is not able to penetrate deep enough to remove deep mole cells. Usually a minimum of 3 laser treatments is required to completely remove a mole.

Mole Removal Procedures: Electrocautery

This method uses an electronic instrument to burn off the moles that lay on the superficial layers of the skin. It is not suitable to be used on raised moles or deep moles as the heating instrument cannot reach deeper than the surface skin.
