Laser Mole Removal
Laser mole removal is another alternative to get rid of moles. In laser mole removal technique, laser beam is used to heat up the cells of the treated mole. When the pigment of the mole absorbs the light beam, the mole breaks. These broken cells will then be absorbed by the body during the healing process. As laser seals the blood vessels, therefore no stitches and sutures are required in laser mole removal.
Moles Suitable for Laser Mole Removal
Laser mole removal is usually used to treat pigmented flat moles. Light beam from the laser does not penetrate deep enough to treat deep moles or raised moles.
Laser Mole Removal Procedure
Skin is numbed before a low setting laser is applied onto the mole. The laser will be absorbed into the skin to lighten the pigmentation. There will be some minor tingling sensation while the laser pulses. Duration of the procedure differs depending on the type, size and how serious is the mole.
The area will turn red and become darker after laser treatment. During the healing process, the mole will turn into a scab. Do not pull off the scab prematurely; it should drop within 2 weeks. Use sunscreen to protect the new skin underneath the mole for at least 6 weeks after the procedure. Try to avoid sun exposure whenever possible to minimize the risk of discoloration or uneven skin color.
Usually a minimum of 3 sessions is required to completely remove a mole with laser mole removal technique. However, you may need more than 3 sessions for removing a larger and more severe mole.
The Risk of Laser Mole Removal
The risk in performing laser mole removal is very low as this is a noninvasive surgery. However, there are risks involved if local anesthesia is used during the procedure. Though it is unlikely, infection could be a possible risk too in laser mole removal. Make sure gloves and sterilized equipments are used during the treatment.
Problems Associated with Laser Mole Removal
While scarring is rare in laser mole removal, expect to see some skin discoloration. You may find laser treatment to only lighten your mole instead of removing it after spending so much money.
The Cost of Laser Mole Removal
Cost of laser mole removal varies from $50 to $400 per session. You need at least 3 sessions to remove a mole. The high cost of treatment is the major downside of laser mole removal technique.
